Scott Surprised By U`s Spirit
With Colchester United sitting dangerously in the relegation zone, just one point off the foot of the table, you may well be forgiven to think that team spirit would be at an all-time low, how wrong one can be…
Scott Vernon has admitted he has been pleasantly surprised by how high team spirit is within Layer Road, since re-joining the U`s last month.
The 24-year-old Manchester-born front-man completed a remarkable deadline-day move to Layer Road, after finding chances hard to come by at Blackpool. Since then Vernon has impressed and was given his first start by Geraint Williams, away to Hull on Saturday and helped earn his side a point in a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
Speaking to fanzine My Football Writer, Vernon said: 'That's exactly it really, you expect a team at the low end of the Championship when I arrived to be down in the dumps, but it's definitely not the case, the lads are on a high and they've all got belief.'
'It's been good, I've been quite impressed with the way the team has been playing. Obviously you look at the table beforehand and you see Colchester bottom of the league but when you're at the club it doesn't really feel like we're down the bottom.'
The ex-Oldham goal poacher also praised the way the U's have been playing of late: 'Obviously we're playing decent stuff and picking up results at the moment so it's quite hard to believe at the moment - but I suppose that's football!'
'The coaching staff and the managers have all got belief so I think that's what you need really, together with the team spirit and obviously the togetherness on a Saturday afternoon is what you need, so I think we've got every chance of staying up.' He added.
