Williams: Matt 'Top Quality'

Colchester United manager Geraint Williams believes his latest addition, Matt Lockwood, is a 'top quality' left back.

Lockwood sealed his switch to North Essex, yesterday, after lengthily talks with U's officials. Williams, who wanted Lockwood on loan in January, watched him a number of times last season, for Nottingham Forest.

Williams told The Colchester Gazette: 'Matt is a top quality left-back.

'I like the fact that he's very comfortable on the ball and he's a footballing full-back.

'He's a fit lad in fantastic condition and he's also a good character.

'He has a great left foot, he's renowned for his set pieces and he did very well at Nottingham Forest,' Williams went on.

Locky will compete with John White for the U's left-back berth, as the U's look for an instant return to the Championship.

U's boss, Williams continued: 'Forest got promoted last season but in fairness Matt just wants to play football.

'He has decided he wants to come to us and compete for his place at Colchester United.'

So are you happy just like Williams? We want to know YOUR thoughts?

I hope we can trust Williams' judgement with this signing. Lets be honest some that he made last season were a bit dubious - Sheringham, Guttridge, Granville, Virgo spring to mind and the jury is still out on Ifil and Platt.

Well apparently he was his number one target, most Forest fans don't rate him, but Orient do, so we willl wait and see...

It didn't happen for him at Forest. He's a quality defender and also as an eye for goal.
