Walker Wins Poll - But Deal Expires Today

Walker Wins Poll - But Deal Expires Today

You, the voting public have called loanee Jimmy Walker Colchester United`s current best choice in goal, although he may be heading back to West Ham.

The 35-year-old stopper, who has kept four clean sheets since his arrival from the Premier League, has called Colchester "a great place to play football."

He won the vote ahead of the two other custodian candidates, Dean Gerken and Mark Cousins.

Walker swept the vote, with 74 percent, while out-on-loan keeper Gerken tied with Cousins as both got 13 percent. That`s despite Dean having played more than 100 games for the white and blues.

Manager Paul Lambert, who today said he would be "an angry man," if a believed hold-up in Football League paperwork prevents Walker from saying in Essex. The boss has made it clear he wants Walker to stay at the Western Homes Community Stadium for as long as possible.

His current deal expires today, after the new year extension, as reported here on Vital Colchester.

Walker himself told the Colchester Gazette recently: "Colchester are all geared up to being a higher club. I want to be at a club that wants to go places and this club does. If Colchester want to keep me, I hope that we can sort something out." Click here to read his full comments.

He also said that ex-Hammer and Colchester striker, Teddy Sheringhm, gave him advice about coming to the club, quoted in the East Anglian Daily Times.

Should Walker depart, that would leave the door open for Dean Gerken to return for the U`s, and the youngster`s time is certainly not up at the club he joined as a youth-teamer. His loan spell with League Two Darlington is also about to expire.

On the Gerkin situation, explained in the East Anglian Daily Times last month: "The gaffer just wanted a bit more experience, when he signed me. He wanted to take Dean out of the firing line."

By all accounts, the Football League are not getting paperwork in on time - and I'm sure if Gerken was on form, then he could challenge Walker. But Walker is a solid goalie.

Walker has been solid for us and it looks like we've done our best to try and keep him, surpose we will just have to wait and see what happens.
