Dean Gerken expects to stay at Darlington for now, but is reading a U`s return and relishing first-team football.
The promising Colchester goalie admitted he is ready to flight for his place in the near future, although expressed gratitude to the Quarters for giving him playing-time opportunity.
"I think I needed to freshen up really," Gerken told the Evening Gazette.
The paper says that he is due to extend his current loan deal in League Two, once the U`s secure West Ham`s Jimmy Walker for the foreseeable.
Gerken, who was a U`s youth player before making more than 100 apperences, added: "I needed a kick up the backside and you can get a bit stale at the same club when you`ve been there for a long while."
The stopper had spent his entire career until now with United.
Gerken will be forever held in high regard in Essex, first for his role in Colchester`s 2005/6 promotion and then as a regular as the club scaled the Championship`s heights the following season.
"I hadn`t played for a while at Colchester and the gaffer [Paul Lambert] and I came to the conclusion that I should go out and play some games.
"Having not played first-team football for a while, I knew I had to up my game and I think that I`ve done that."
Keeping goal is certainly position that relies upon having individual confidence, but Gerken thinks has now regained some from after a little stunt in his so-far impressive development as a player.
He added: "I think I`ve now got back to where I was about a year ago. Playing behind a new defence has helped and I feel more confident. I know that I can go back to Colchester and fight for my place."
