'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Lambert Still Has Promotion In Sight

Paul Lambert still thinks that the 'play-offs are still on,' despite the U's disappointing defeat to Walsall.

The U's wasted a number of chances early on, and were made to pay as the visitors went into the break two goals to the good. To read Vital Colchester's match report, click here.

Post-match Lambert said: 'Goals change games. Jamie (Guy) had a couple of early one-on-ones, and maybe he should have scored from at least one of them.

'But he then lost one of his contact lenses, which is why I had to take him off at half-time. His vision was blurred and he didn't have a spare set.

'We had more half-chances in the second-half, and had a goal disallowed for offside (Paul Reid),'
he rued.

'However, I still think that the play-offs are still on. Nothing much has changed. We are still in a position to do something.'

Saddlers counterpart Chris Hutchings said, following their third game without defeat: 'I'm very pleased to get three points against a very good side in Colchester.

'We didn't start too well and Colchester had a good chance early on. Manny (Smith) came on early because of an injury (to Rhys Weston), and he did well against some dangerous strikers.

'Colchester got behind us a few times, and on another day we could have conceded. But that's three matches unbeaten for us, and we're closing the gap on Colchester,'
he concluded.

So do you agree with Lambert that the U's still have a chance of making the play-offs, and possible promotion? Or will we be spending another season in League One?

No chance , we can't play good against teams above us let alone win / score.
Daryl Peck
... maybe even another run of games like we just had won't be enough. These two games were key because you've got to beat those around you to climb the table. Lambert will bring in another striker, as Guy was unlucky and didn't take his chance. Only the lad's second ever U's start - ever - and he is the sqaud's third current longest-serving player!
Yeah, cant really see us getting a play-off spot, think we have just got to really go for it next season, seems like Lambert is building a good squad.
StevieG Col U
Oh, yeah: very happy with the sqaud. Most of the lads here should say - sell Sunday and give Guy a run in the side. He's the right man for the job, at the moment. Things look good under him!
... also the club has a policy that doesn't make snse. Claiming there is no future in youth development with the recent cut-backs, yet still buying players in the market. Investment in youth teams must remain a part of the club.
We shall see just how good you are at the weekend! Up the Blues
The fact that Southend are near us in the table, but that they have no chance of promotion, probably shows with irony that we are not going to win promotion this year. The first Essex Derby this season was a great game!
Who'd wanna buy Sunday??? Think he's out-of-contract anyway. Yeah, the match was top quality at Roots Hall until stoppage time!! lol
StevieG Col U
We need to sell Coyne , Heath , Ifil , Lockwood , Possibly Vernon and Gillespie if anyone would be stupid enough to ffer 400k + , try and get gobern on perm , Sunday has only a year contract so Lambert wont renew it.
Daryl Peck
Reckon Coyne will go, think Heath, however, would be handy back up, but depends on if we keep going for Rob Jones in the summer. Don't think we should get rid of both Lockwood and Ifil, as you need cover. Is just so annoying that Gillespie can't get fit! Defo should try to get Gobern permanently.
StevieG Col U
Means we are going to make a loss on many of the players, maybe not Ifil as he is young. But Gilly will be staying and next season should prove himself. He should do it this season!! Coyne to go, almost sure!
Yeah, am very sure Coyne will go, what's the point of having him if he always goes away with Australia and never plays for us???!!!
StevieG Col U
Just unlucky with it this season, and Paul Reid has been in the team. It could work both ways, so maybe a lose-lose situation. If the club were clear at the top of the table, he'd still go because he could argue the club would cover him. As it is, Reid has done very well this term and Coyne is becoming a reguar reserve for the national side. Think he'll only play one in two games for the rest of this season, although that can't have been the play when he was first made skipper in summer.
Phil Awful and Lockwood should go, plenty of other options for their positions
... Ifil, I have to say has been that bad. He doesn't seem to like defending and also was played out of position. He must want to go - what happened to his loan move away? Col U got him for offering more money than Southamton. There's a thought! I over-rated him when he arrived, that's for sure.
Well, his girlfriend was about to give birth or something like that so he could only join a club quite close to us and nothing really materialised. He aint the best defender, probably a better midfielder!
StevieG Col U
Agree, Matt, Paul Reid has been arguably our best player this season, along with Dean Hammond, one of the better things George Williams did was sign him on a free, top business! Up the U's!
StevieG Col U
I honestly wouldnt mind seeing Coyne replace Pat because Pat really struggles with big strong defenders and i feel Coyne would get into tackles more , i rated him as one of our best defenders last year and would love to see him form a partnership with Reid. Yeates also could be on his way as think this may be his last year in contract.
Daryl Peck
I would like Coyne to form a solid partnership with Reid, think if Coyne could get back to his best then we would have a top-quality centre-back pairing, just not sure it's gonna happen though...
StevieG Col U
What??? Yeatsey forever a Col U player!! Can see why he'd want to go, though...
We are gonna smash you when you visit the Galpharm, ending your play off hopes!!
In your dreams! Up the U's!
StevieG Col U
we will see :P, fancy answering some Q's ahead of the game, ill mail them to ya later in week mate! Are you coming up for the game?
Sure, will answer if you send this way! Up the good ol' White 'n' Blues!
well you do know u guys play in blue and white because of us!
Has said the same thing again a week later (today, 23/2/09) after third loss in a row! All bets are off now, right?
