Hammond Wins Player of The Year

Steven Gillespie and Dean Hammond have topped Vital Colchester`s poll of the club`s player of the season.

The unlucky Gillespie, who has scored just five times this season, ironically topped voting, followed secondly by actual winner Dean Hammond. Gilly, as he is known by U's fans, has had an appaling season with injury and suspension.

Former Brighton midfielder Hammond, and now U`s captain, however, scooped 27 percent of the vote in this latest poll to come in second. Gillespie, in recognition of his undoubted talent, somehow scored well above that.

Hammond, though, picked up the actual award at yesterday`s last home game of the season verses Peterborough.

"It`s a great honour to win this award," Hammond told the Colchester Gazette. "A lot of the lads at the club have had a good season as well. There`s a lot of competition," he added.

Our poll shows just how much competition there was, with top scorer Mark Yeates (7 percent) and defender Mark Tierney (11 percent) also standing a chance of winning.
