Platt Carried Too Much Burden

Colchester United boss Paul Lambert says the side relied too heavily on Clive Platt last season as they looked to make an imitate return to the Championship.

He admitted on reflection that last season`s lack of consistent strikers took a toll on Platt, who scored ten times.

"We didn`t have any natural width in the team until Simon Hackney (the former Carlisle winger) and Ashley (Vincent) came in," Lambert told the BBC today.

"And Platty (Platt) virtually carried the front line on himself. (Steven) Gillespie was injured and Scott (Vernon) was in and out of the side," the Scottish boss went on.

U`s fans will be hoping for a lot more from Gillespie, who should be fully fit for the new campaign.

Lambert is sure to bring in another front-man as one of his half-a-dozen buys this summer. He does not want a repeat of last season as Colchester look to push for promotion from League One.

"Platt had a hard burnden to carry," Lambert added.

How many new strikers do the U's need?

If we play with width and get lots of crosses in then Platt will get goals. . .

Well, when Yeates aint played (which is another debate), and we played with Hackney and Gobern Platt looks a really good player, getting on the end of crosses.
