Can WHCS Become A Special Place?

ARSENAL INFAMOUSLY took an age to settle at the Emirates. So has New Ground Syndrome struck at Colchester United?

Boss Paul Lambert thinks so, and called for the squad and fans to do more next season to make the place a "real football stadium."

Lambert told the BBC that the £14-million council-funded project was a welcome upgrade from Layer Road, even if it is not held yet in the same affectionate light.

"We`re tying to sort our poor home form out; you could tell the new lads anything and it wouldn`t really phase them because they weren`t a part of it," the U`s boss underlined on the BBC this week.

"Getting fans in behind the goal will make a major difference; we will have to try and generate that," Lambert added. He used the example of how MK Dons have challenged at the top of the lower leagues thanks partly to a fan-base cheering on from behind the goal.

On the official site this week Lambert is also quoted as saying such an action would give the club more of "an identity and make it feel more like home."

The one outstanding victory so far at the Western Homes Stadium came in October, when Colchester thrashed Carlisle five goals to nil..
