Club 'Very Happy' With Stoppers

The mystery behind Ben Williams` possible arrival from Carlisle deepens today as the club claim they are "very happy" with their current goalkeeping choices.

U`s Chief Executive, Steve Bradshaw, could have simply been toeing the party line when he made the comment in today`s edition of the Colchester Daily Gazette.

Colchester have Dean Gerken and Mark Cousins under contract and each player was given a fair run in the team by manager Paul Lambert last season as he searched for winning combinations.

Bradshaw`s admission simply serves to shroud the reasoning behind a bid for Williams, then, which has not been formally accepted despite reports that Williams was already talking terms with Colchester.

He will in fact meet Lambert tomorrow to discuss a potential deal, having been given permission by presnet manager, Greg Abbott.

Perhaps Colchester feel they can get a good deal in exchange for Williams, who may be available cheaply because of Carlisle`s widely-reported financial problems.

However, recruitment of the former Manchester United stopper would be sure to unnerve Gerken and Cousins.

Unconfirmed speculation is that the U`s will offload a player in the opposite direction if Williams agrees to join.

Colchester have money to spend following the departure last week of Mark Yeates to Middlesbrough but had been expected to invest it in an attacker.

Lambert - who has already signed three players this summer - previously said he was looking to bring in just six players this summer.

Why are the U's courting Williams?
