The Best Things In Life... # 1

Top 5 - Star Signings

Go ahead, you know you want to! Tell us which players you would pick up on a free, looking at the latest list on the PFA Website, if you were U's manager!

Hundreds of players found themselves out of work on July 1, with clubs across the country telling players they could not afford to offer terms.

Just over a week later, Vital Colchester says it is over to you! Got an eye for a bargain? Working on the rule that money is no object, we at Vital U`s have a go at listing our current top five freebies! Do you agree?

5) Leroy Lita - Striker, aged 24

Released by Reading ------Interested - Middlesbrough, Crystal Palace, Wolves

Why I should buy him: Still young, Lita represented the England U-21 side in 2007 at a tournament in Holland, scoring three times and winning a spot in the UEFA Dream Team for the competition.

Lita hit twelve goals in 27 games during his first season with Reading after signing from Bristol, continuing with seven the following season in the Premier League as his team exceeded all expectation in 2006/7.

Although struggling for first-team action since, Lita hit an impressive thirteen goals in eight reserve games for the Royals last season and also netted seven in sixteen appearances on loan at Norwich, a rate of almost one in two.

Likely To Sign For Colchester if possible? 4/10

4) Michal Misfud Striker, aged 28

Released by Coventry ------ Interested - Sheffield United

Why I should buy him: A proven striker in Malta, Mifsud once had a trial with Manchester United and in 2007 went onto to score twice against them in the League Cup. He ended that season with 19 goals in all competitions, by far his most successful season in England to date.

Likely To Sign For Colchester if possible? 4/10

3) Dean Bowditch Striker, aged 23

Released by Ipswich ------ Interested - Notts County

Why I should buy him: Former Ipswich prodigy Bowditch was has plenty of experience and a prolific reserve-team record.

He has also looked impressive when on loan at numerous clubs in the lower divisions, scoring regularly for Burnley, Northampton, Wycombe and Brentford. Would be a solid signing for any club outside the Championship.

Likely To Sign For Colchester if possible? 8/10

2) David Connelly Striker, aged 32

Released by Sunderland------ Interested - QPR

Why I should buy him: Has international experience, strengthened with spells in and around Premiership sides.

Connolly was a regular scorer with Wimbledon and prolifically brilliant earlier in his career with at domestic level.

Likely To Sign For Colchester if possible? 5/10

1) Sol Campbell, Defender, aged 34

Publically Considering Offers after hinting at exit ------ Interested - Aston Villa, Newcastle United

Why I should buy him: Bags of experience and committed to at least another two years in the game, Campbell could bring calmness to any back four.

Likely To Sign For Colchester if possible? 0/10!
Tomorrow: this feature will look at those to gamble on in the current free frenzy!

If I could have any of these, I'd love Bowditch, and wouldn't mind Lita! Up the U's!

Bowditch - No Thank You!!! Lita wont come, he rejected Wolves, loves himself too much. Connelly - I'd take him.

Alright, son, alright!! I'd take him, but then I'm not the manager.

Who would you sign?!
Matt_Us
When everyone was raving about Bent at Ipswich Joe Royle rated Bowditch as a better player/prospect. He never really had much chance with Ipswich but could be a useful squad player for us?
ooohhJohnnieJackson
Exactly, I think he has an arlight record with other clubs! I would have Bowditch, yes. He's on trial with Notts County right now! [Edited by MattUs]
