Top 5 - Free Men To Gamble On

Go ahead, you know you want to! Tell us which players you would pick up on a free, looking at the latest list on the PFA Website, if you were U's manager!

Hundreds of players found themselves out of work on July 1, with clubs across the country telling players they could not afford to offer terms.

Just over a week later, Vital Colchester says it is over to you! After yesterday`s fun, click here, we thought we`d list some players work a gamble, working on the rule that money is no object, we at Vital U`s have a go at listing our current top five! Do you agree?

5) Nick Colgan - Goalie, aged 35

Released by Sunderland ------Interested - Grimsby

Why I should buy him: Colgan is a free agent after spending time in playing second-fiddle in second seasons at Ipswich Town and Sunderland although is fairly experienced at Championship level having played over one hundred games for Barnsley.

Likely To Sign For Colchester if possible? 6/10

4) Ugo Ehiogu Defender, aged 36

Released by Sheffield United ------ Interested - None

Why I should buy him: A former England international and linked by members of this website as a possible target while the club where still in the Championship, Ehiogu would be useful to any side in the Championship downwards. Although there are younger alternatives, Ehiogu could be worth a punt if he can avoid injuries in future.

Likely To Sign For Colchester if possible? 6/10

3) Marlon Broomes Defender, aged 31

Released by Blackpool ------ Interested - Crewe Alexandra

Why I should buy him: Ex-Premier League man is a journeyman with arguably many good years of service left in front of him. Confirmed as a free agent yesterday.

Likely To Sign For Colchester if possible? 5/10

2) Michael Bridges Striker, aged 30

Released by Hull City------ Interested - Carlisle United, Darlington

Why I should buy him: An injury-free Bridges could probably grab a few goals, and although probably would not cut it in the top-flight now, could be a good impact substitute.

Likely To Sign For Colchester if possible? 4/10

1) Henri Camara Striker aged 32

Released by Wigan Athletic ------ Interested - A Turkish side

Why I should buy him: He'll sell you some shirts! Still living manily off the reputation as part of a suprising Senegal side at the 2002 World Cup, Camara has had spells at Wolves, Southampton and Celtic as well as Wigan. A huge risk of a signing, but could be the master of the unexpected. Can play as either a striker or midfielder.

Likely To Sign For Colchester if possible? 0/10!

Tomorrow: this feature will look at those to avoid in the current free frenzy!

Would take Bridges. All over 30 though...

I noticed that! I guess none of these are REALLY worth the risk. Youth is the new God to worship!
Matt_Us
Why would yoy take Bridges? To keep Gilly company in the treatment room? LOL
ooohhJohnnieJackson
Yeah, that's what I was wondering! I guess he did alright for Carlisle there in his first spell. Now I look at it, I wouldn't have any of them!!
Matt_Us
Well, he's gotta have some injury-free seasons sometime surely. Monthly-rolling contract...
