Exclusive: U's Prepared To Release Lockwood

Colchester United are preparing to give Matt Lockwood away for nothing a year after he joined for an undisclosed fee from Nottingham Forest, Vital Colchester has learned.

In the same week as defender Chris Coyne left on a free transfer to Perth Glory, it appears that former Leyton Orient stalwart Lockwood, 32, has been told he can secure a similar release, pending another club`s offer.

The left back could re-sign for Orient, whom he left in 2006/7 after a prolific season of goalscoring. He netted 11 times.

That potential switch, reported here last month following press speculation, would reunite him with Geraint Williams, the manager who signed him for the U`s.

Lockwood has been unable to secure a starting spot with United because of injury. He has been pushed down the pecking order at Colchester by January 2009 arrival, Marc Tierney, who shone in Lockwood`s preferred position.

It is thought that the player was one of a handful told by manager Paul Lambert he could leave the club during a round of talks held with the whole squad at the end of last season.

He signed a two-year deal upon arrival last summer, but the possibility that he will quit for a nominal free has now emerged, since Lockwood has been found shortlisted on a directory of players available for no fee on the Professional Footballers` Association website.

So, Lockwood can leave for free, but will Orient take him?
