CUFC Connections: Q & A - Hull City

CUFC Connections: Q & A With Vital Hull City

Vital Hull Editor, Matt Wilson, kindly agreed to talk to Vital U's, bringing you the latest views from a club with many Colchester connections, in a one-off summer special following thier 2008/9 top-flight survival season...

Q: Ex-Colchester favourite, Aidan Davison, has recently come back from coaching in the US, after we all felt he`d be gone for good. Why has he been drafted in and is it true that some Hull fans are unhappy with the appointment?

A: I have not heard too much about his appointment to be honest. He has immediately gone to the club's high altitude training camp in Bormio, Italy in order to improve the abilities of Boaz Myhill, Matt Duke and Tony Warner.

We have some good shot-stoppers but our keepers have always lacked the ability to effectively command their area. Hopefully Davison can work on this and improve their game.

Q: Another former U`s man, no longer with Hull, Wayne Brown, has joined Leicester. Was that because, he just couldn`t cut his teeth in the Premiership?

A: Wayne Brown only featured once and that was when we lost 5-0 to Wigan in August. From that point, there was almost no way back, which was a real shame.

Brown just didn't have the pace to cope with the PL, and he was found out immediately. He was a real star during our promotion campaign and Leicester have signed a very good CCC defender.

Q: Phil Parkinson`s position at Charlton doesn`t look safe and he did take them down. What do you make of that and do you think he would have taken City down in 2006/7, had he stayed?

A: Parkinson started off with a fantastic attacking intent, but lost the confidence after we lost 3-2 to Barnsley in only our second game of the season. He soon tried to put the emphasis on defending, and it just didn't work. Although his tactics proved his downfall, his signings were actually very good with Michael Turner and Sam Ricketts now integral parts of our PL team.

The likes of Wayne Brown and Richard Garcia, who both played for you, were also important parts of our promotion team. For whatever reason, he appears to be a better number two than number one. We would have had a huge struggle to remain in the league had he stayed.

Q: Chris Coyne recently had his contract terminated with the U`s after problems relating to international call-ups for Australia. How often does former Colchester winger, Richard Garcia, get called up and what is your club`s stance on that?

A: Garcia has only started to feature for Australia recently. Being in the PL, when there is an international weekend, you usually have a week off so it doesn't impose on us. In your situation, it is more difficult when players go away on international duty and you have to play 'reserve' payers in their place.

Q: Is ex-U's man, Craig Fagan, the same player he was before Newcastle`s Danny Guthrie broke his tibia last season?

A: Fagan was on fire until he broke his leg. Although slow to start upon his return, Fagan eventually scored the goal that kept us in the PL with his equaliser against Bolton. A really determined character, Fagan is a valuable asset to the team.

Will Davison be a hit at Hull? Can Garcia make the Oz World Cup squad?
