England Ladies Lose To Iceland At WHCS

Iceland Make It Eight Wins In A Row

England women's team lost 0-2 in the second international ever played at Colchester`s year-old Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Hope Powell`s side have another game, against Denmark on Wednesday, as the final preparation before next month`s European Championship in Finland.

England went into the match ranked ninth in the world, their highest position yet, as national football graced South East grass again after England Under 19`s males beat Germany in a one-nil in November 2008.

The result for England`s women will come as a blow but coach Powell is aiming for a quarter-final place at minimum during the next torment. Her side have also played at 2007`s World Cup in China and before that England`s Euro 2005.

Iceland were true to form in winning, according a UEFA report on the game, which can be read here, as they continued an impressive run now eight games without loss.

Before the match, an F.A. spokeswoman confirmed on Essex-based radio station, Deam 100 FM, that plans for a female English Summer Super League are still on course after delays.

It is expected to commence from 2010 and forms another part of the of the association`s pledge since 1993 to help the women`s game go professional.
