Ebbsfleet 1-1 U's - Non-Leaguers Hold U's

Joel Thomas scored his first Colchester United, goal but it was not enough to see his side win at Ebbsfleet United.

Boss Paul Lambert gave youth team defender Tom Bender a berth in the U's defence, as he rotated the pack.

And the U's took the lead inside quarter-of-an-hour, with Thomas touching Clive Platt's goal-ward header into the net.

The U's should have gone into half-time with a bigger advantage after wasting a number of first-half chances.

Early in the second period and the Blue Square Premier side drew level. Ishmael Welsh headed home a cross at the back-post to beat Mark Cousins in the U's goal.

Injury-jinxed striker Steven Gillespie was given a run-out after the break, as the U's looked for a winner, but they were forced to settle for a draw.

The U's now travel to Rushden & Diamonds tomorrow in the last pre-season workout.

Should the U's have won? Or was a draw fair?

Hope he can get a few more in the league, when the season starts! Up the U's!
