'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Gilly: 'Never Had A Spell Like This Before` - 1

Vital Colchester publishes in three parts the full transcript of the Dream 100 FM question and answer session with injury-dogged striker, Steven Gillespie. The former Cheltenham man arrived a year ago but his debut season was bighted by absence. Broadcast: 06/08/2009.

"I`ve never had a spell like this before. Like any footballer, I`ve had an injury or two, but not such a consistent spell of three or four games followed by missing the next few. Coming in for one or two matches has been really frustrating.

Just Bad Luck

"It`s something we`ve definitely addressed and thought about. 'Am I wearing different boots, warming up differently, is the training different to what I`ve done at previous clubs?' I`ve addressed every area and really come down to the conclusion that it is just bad luck.

"It`s been tough, especially after the season I had last year; it was really stop-start for me. I look to work hard during the summer and come back fighting fit and not miss a game this season. Obviously it started off similar and it`s a really frustrating time for me to get injury after injury. This time I`m going to work even harder to make sure this is the last. I want to get a lot of games - maybe I`ll miss one or two at the start of the season - but not miss another for the rest of the season.
Preventing Future Injury

"It`s a case of strengthening up rather than that there`s a major injury there; it`s not something that`s going to keep me out for a long period of time, just a case of building up and hopefully preventing future injury.

"You miss a lot of the banter and being with the lads. That`s one of the hardest parts because you are in an hour or two earlier than they are and you go home an hour or two later as well so, as much as you are not seen around the ground, you are there even more. You`re in morning, noon and night sometimes trying to get back fit as quickly as possible."
