'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Gilly: 'I Was Fitter Than Most This Time' - 2

Vital Colchester publishes in three parts the full transcript of the Dream 100 FM question and answer session with injury-dogged striker, Steven Gillespie. The former Cheltenham man arrived a year ago but his debut season was bighted by absence. Broadcast: 06/08/2009.

"In particular this summer I was fitter than probably most - I was up where with the pre-season running, with the top lads winning the races and stuff like that, so you know, it`s just so frustrating to come back fit and strong, but get another little niggle away in Germany on the pre-season camp.

"Coming back too soon was only probably down to my own fault really, being over-enthusiastic and wanting to do well. Obviously I came with a big price-tag on my shoulders. I`ve got the type of personality to want to prove how well I can do. If I`d come on a free, I`d have been just as eager to show I`m a good player who can score goals.

"That fee doesn`t make me any more or less determined to do well. I want to justify the price-tag and prove people right in their initial judgement of my ability to play.

Justify The Price-tag And Prove People Right

"Football is the type of job where you go away and constantly think about it because it`s a lifestyle, really; I`m not going to stand here and complain about it because I`m one of the lucky ones. Everyone I know wants to be a footballer and luckily I am doing it. I wouldn`t change my life for the world. But when you get an injury like that, you can`t stop thinking about it.

"You just remember the good times - they get you through - and just concentrate on working hard, looking to get fit and get that news game. As soon as you get out there, there`s a possibility as a striker that you could score a goal and there`s really no better feeling than getting fans signing your name and getting everyone to jump off their seats and cheer."
