Gilly: 'Fans Have Been Brilliant' - 3

Vital Colchester publishes in three parts the full transcript of the Dream 100 FM question and answer session with injury-dogged striker, Steven Gillespie. The former Cheltenham man arrived a year ago but his debut season was bighted by absence. Broadcast: 6/08/2009.

"Now Kevin Lisbie`s come in, I`m eager to see what type of player he is as he`s scored so many goals for Colchester already and see if he can do something together. But every time I`ve played with Clive Platt, he seems to run a lot of knock-downs and flick-ons, but it was petty mixed last season when I did play. I played with Scott Vernon a few times, so I know everyone`s got different qualities.

"I came back after having a little injury for the Carlisle game [last October]; there was a lot riding on that game for me personally because we were struggling, hadn`t got any results at the new ground. I was still eager to impress and I was playing against John Ward, an old manager of mine, at Carlisle at the time. He`d brought me to Cheltenham and I`d done really well for him, so it was demoralising.

Now Kevin Lisbie`s Come In, I`m Eager To See What Type Of Player He Is

"It certainly is difficult. If we get the odd day off and are not feeling too stiff or sore, there are a couple of lads who enjoy a game of golf. There`s a good golfing school at the club now and I play quite a lot with Perks. [David Perkins] It`s pretty close between us as well! Whoever loses has to buy the dinner that night - it`s good fun and I think socialising away from the club does help on a Saturday.

"Even the Chairman [Robbie Cowling] has been doing little things for me off-the-pitch to get me back playing as soon as possible. It does mean a lot, after the season I`ve had. When I get back on the pitch the fans are still singing my name. I don`t think they realise quite how much of a boost it gives. I`d like to repay the fans more than anyone for getting behind me because it would be easy for them to get on my back. To get the support that I do, with fans coming up to you in the street, is brilliant."
