Top Names Interested - Appointment Weeks Away

The unexpected drama of a search for Colchester United`s next manager begins tomorrow - right after the U's finalise a deal for leaving captain Dean Hammond and play tonight`s game with Gillingham.

There are no official names in the frame but plenty of speculation already about who will succeed Paul Lambert now that he has departed to Norwich City.

Mark Robins at Rotherham United, who had been tipped for City`s now-taken hotseat, is an early contender among fans, although Steve Bradshaw said at lunchtime today some "top-draw" attention has been shown in the vacancy.

"The search hasn`t started yet but we`ve had a remarkable amount of interest already. We`ve had several phone calls from some absolutely top-draw applicants and we will consider their applications and go through a process which is likely to take three weeks or so."

So there you have it - the starting gun in the club's race to replace Lambert has been let off already. Even if it begins as a slow walk and not exactly a sprint.

After today's fast-paced events, you can't blame Colchester United for wanting to take thier time over this one.

Feel that for minimal disruption to the side then Joe Dunne is obvious replacement, knows the players and knows the style of play that we have worked on all pre season......

That might prove wise. He didn't seem too overly keen when asked today but there has been a lot going on! He knows the club and the players and it could be a great thing for the club.

Coppell, Curbishley, Boothroyd are being mentioned but they will get linked with every job going. The most bizzare name is that of Sheringham!!!! No way!

No thanks to Teddy. Might as well take our time but a new manager may want to find a replacement for Hammond before the window shuts!
