Sheringham Tells U`s No - Will Paul Buckle?
Teddy Sheringham will not be applying for the Colchester vacancy but Torquay United`s Paul Buckle may stall over a new deal to strengthen his chances of landing the job.
Both the ex-U`s players had emerged as candidates earlier today, until Sheringham`s agent claimed he would not be interested in swapping the pleasantry of ITV`s punditry for a place in the U's dugout.
The ex-England and Manchester United man fits club-set criteria that the person succeeding former boss Paul Lambert must ideally be out of work - avoiding any compensation disputes - but had been linked during the past 24-hours on the strength of his reputation alone, in light of his year`s service during 2007-8.
Torquay United manager Buckle played for Colchester during the 1990s and is someone chief executive, Steve Bradshaw, admitted this evening on local radio he personally admires.
Buckle also comments today in the South Devon Herald Express: "I am flattered that I've been linked with a League One club, especially one that I know, just as I knew Torquay United when I came back here."
The local East Anglian Daily Times picked up the same story, although successive promotion-winner Buckle went on to say there is currently "nothing to talk about" as regards the U`s post.
Speaking later on Essex-based radio station, Dream 100 FM this evening, Bradshaw said Buckle would be welcome to apply for the position and consideration would come equally with all other potential appointees.
Bradshaw added that, among many of those who have already submitted applications for the role at Colchester, some are "world-renowned" names.
