'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Loyal Pat Baldwin Couldn`t See Life After U`s

Pat Baldwin has revealed, despite receiving some "very good offers" in summertime, he just could not contemplate a future without Colchester United.

An immediate almost immediate, if lucky, reward for his loyalty to the Essex side was a deserved promotion to the rank of captain after Dean Hammond`s departure.

Should the sturdy defender affectionately christened 'Rio', after England`s Ferdinand who plays in his position, see through his current contract with the club then he will be rewarded with a testimonial come 2012.

"This is my eighth season - I`ve always said from day one that I`ve absolutely loved every moment I`ve been at this club," he told Dream 100 FM.

He continued: "My contract was up in the summer and I had some very good offers on the table, but in the end I knew I wouldn`t be able to pull myself away from the club; I really enjoy it. I`m settled in the area, living very close to family and friends and couldn`t see any reason to leave, especially as I thought at the start of the season I saw everything put in place to give us a really good chance of promotion."

The talismanic Baldwin also admitted a huge respect for ex-boss Phil Parkinson, whose new team Charlton were suggested as a possible destination for player when it appeared he was stalling over his future.

He also showed his passion last week when saying any player incapable of preparing for the league game against Leeds United shouldn`t be in the professional game.

"Phil Parkinson was also fantastic to play under - I played some of the best football of my career under him - so I`ve got a tremendous respect for him," Baldwin gushed, before saying that successor Geraint Williams was proving the doubters wrong with accomplishments at Leyton Orient.

Let`s hope Baldwin is chosen to lead the side permanently under a new manager.
