Joe Dunne still has a "big future" at Colchester - even as a new manager prepares to take over following last night`s loss away to Gillingham.
Those, anyway, were the most recent words of dual Chairman-owner, Robbie Cowling, as most U`s fans hope the well-endeared caretaker is assured a long-term place at the Essex club amid more changing times following Paul Lambert`s departure.
In an interview recorded during Saturday`s league game with Leeds, aired again last night during BBC Radio Essex coverage of the Football League Trophy, he established: "Joe`s got a big future at the cub and I think perhaps one of the lessons learned here is that to make sure we do keep that link with people that have been at the club a long time - maybe we lost that a little bit in the last regime."
Dunne, who said last night in the Evening Gazette the short spell in temporary charge had improved him as a potential future first-team manager received a fulsome endorsement from Cowling about the way he has completed his work.
"Joe`s been fantastic. It`s really gelled the club together. I think the fans where fantastic, especially that evening [during the Gillingham league game fifteen days ago] , the staff were brilliant and for Joe, it`s been absolutely excellent; he`s really stepped up to the mark and I`ve enjoyed working with him tremendously over the last week or so."
It recently transpired that a pre-agreement of Lambert`s contract terms as U`s manager stipulated that Dunne was kept on at the club in his promoted capacity as reserve-team coach, which in light what eventually followed, proved a very smart move by the club indeed.
