'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Right Club, Right Time - And I`ll Be Loyal

Aidy Boothroyd has this evening assured any overly-anxious Colchester United fans he is prepared to show loyalty to them and the club after hearing of Robbie Cowling`s three-year plan to bring back Championship football.

Boothroyd, speaking on Dream 100 FM, fended off some awkward questions in his first full-length interview as the U`s manager but reaffirmed that his decision to take charge at Weston Homes was a case of choosing the right club at the right time.

"If I said I`d stay at the club for the rest of my life should Manchester United came in from me tomorrow, that would be a lie. I know that a lot of managers would perhaps bat that one back, but I believe you have to be honest in setting out as you mean to go on."

He also reflected on a whirlwind 24 hours since his confirmed appointment and also a visit to the town`s Garrison, praising the community spirit there and promising to make it and integral part of the club itself.

"I think Colchester is ripe right now for more positive, happier times but it is important that they are sustainable times; the aims are to get to the Championship, to sustain it and then who knows."

He continued: "The town, the club is all set to go and it just needs somebody to light the fuse and hopefully I can do it. When I`m old and grey and in my rocking chair I want to sit back and say I was England manager and I`ve done great things in the game."

Boothroyd went on to add, hopefully to the delight of any avid Colchester supporter, that he had thought long and hard before deciding that he was committed to the cause.

"Am I going to jump ship as soon as I can? No. Why not? Because I think there`s a job to do here and there`s an obligation to see it through. I was very loyal when I was at Watford and I had lots of offers to leave. But I didn`t do that because loyalty works two ways.".

Don't think he can be expected to be an instrant hit, although maybe! Aidy, take your time and Colchester will get behind you!

Very impressed so far - cool, calm, confident and HONEST (are you listening Paul Lambert?). Seems to have given the fans a real lift - probably the whole club too.
