U's Ace Gillespie Nearing Full-Fitness

Colchester United front-man Steven Gillespie is nearing a first-team return following his latest injury problems - And I'm sure I'm not the only U's fan strongly, willing him to stay injury free!

The U's record-signing, who it is clear is blessed with a natural goalscoring ability, has struggled enormously with injury during his first year in North Essex. Hamstring, hamstring + more hamstring problems have blighted the 24-year-old U's career so far.

But after coming off the bench in the U's reserve team draw against near-neighbours Ipswich Town, on Wednesday, Gillespie will be hoping to have turned a corner. The former Cheltenham Town forward made quite an impression, as he played the last 30-minutes, at Portman Road.

New-boss Aidy Boothroyd was in the stands for the second-string fixture and commented post-match.

'Steven Gillespie also had half an hour and created chances. With a bit more fitness, he could have scored three goals,' Boothroyd enthused.

The ex-Watford boss confirmed the U's will get Gillespie on a fitness regime which will not only help him reach full-fitness but more importantly keep him fit.

He concluded: 'We will get him to build on that display today and get him on a programme that gets him fit and keeps him fit.'
