An understrength Colchester United side made it through to the fourth round of the Essex Senior Cup with a win over Ilford tonight.
As expected boss Aidy Boothroyd fielded a youthful, reserve-filled side; with the likes of Mark Cousins, Alan Maybury, David Fox and Joel Thomas all playing. Skipper Pat Baldwin also made a return from injury, featuring for the first time in around two months.
The game at the Cricklefield Stadium hinged on a hectic few minutes just before half-time. U's stopper Cousins pulled off a fine save to deny the home side from the penalty spot and a quick release found Steven Gillespie - who fired into the top-corner with the game's only goal.
Now the U's look onto their second cup tie with a non-league side of the week, one which may prove rather more difficult, against Bromley at the weekend. ![]()
