League One Rivals Make Baldwin Bid

League One Rivals Make Baldwin Bid

Colchester United defender Pat Baldwin is the subject of strong interest from Bristol Rovers.

The U's League One opponents are keen to keep Baldwin - a player who has spent the last month on loan at the Memorial Stadium - and have sent an offer East to Essex. Rovers are looking to take Baldwin on a loan deal until the end of the season and then complete a full-time transfer for him during the close season.

Yesterday, as reported on Vital Colchester, U's manager Aidy Boothroyd admitted that the cultured centre-back could move on this month.

'We have spoken with Colchester manager Adie Boothroyd and made an offer, but it is a complicated situation because he still has two-and-a-half years left on his contract there,' director of football Lennie Lawrence told the Bristol Evening Post.

However, due to the length of the 27-year-old's current WHCS contract - and his salary - the financial side of things could pose a problem. Despite this Lawrence revealed he was hopeful of having something sorted in the next few days.

He added: 'We are not a million miles apart, although it isn't done yet - but I would like to get it completed by the start of next week.'

I feel exactly as I felt when I read that Karl Duguid and Dean Gerken were about to be sold. Very sad. Of course it is up to fans to be emotional, not the manager. But if you sucked out hero-worship and the sub-plots that swirl football’s fantasy, all you'd have left is laundry, lumps of grass and escapism. I'll miss 'Rio,' thanks for the seven years, son; you've been a Blue and White knight!

Has been a true legend for the club but think the time is right. Aidy wants to clear out a few defenders - Pat is probably the highest earner and the most sellable so it makes sense. He wont want to be here unless he's playing week in - week out and we cant offer that. Rio, Rio, Rio! Up the U's!

All very logical, Steve! Could offer another cup seven years no problem I suppose... *sobs*
