'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Handball Goal Angers Aidy

Colchester United boss Aidy Boothroyd vented his frustration after Saturday's 1-1 draw against lowly Wycombe Wanderers - following Gareth Ainsworth's wrongly-allowed stoppage time goal!

The U's led 1-0, thanks to a cooly taken second-half strike from free transfer signing Ian Henderson; a goal that had looked to have earned the U's all three points. However, three minutes into stoppage time, veteran Ainsworth diverted a Wanderer's cross into the back of the net, beyond Ben Williams, clearly with the use of his hand. And although a vast majority of the 5,593 inside the WHCS could prominently see the handball involved, the officiating team failed to spot the controversial touch.

Post-match, Boothroyd admitted it was a hard pill to swallow: 'It's a bad decision. When you are in a promotion run-in you have to rely on referees and linesmen to get things correct.'

'It's a blatantly incorrect decision. He has handballed it, you cannot have a go at him - he's going to do whatever he can to win,' the U's boss continued.

With just eight games left to relight a promotion charge, the U's manager admitted that his side have got to 'take it on the chin.'

Boothroyd concluded: 'It's one of those awful decisions that in the end could cost us.'
