Boss Aidy Boothroyd was looking for reasons to be cheerful after the club`s faint play-off hopes were finally ended following the Tranmere Rovers stalemate.
Both sides lacked any real conviction, despite theoretically having something to play for and the game ended all-sqaure.
"We got what we deserved today - we went out to win the game and couldn`t do it in the end," he told BBC Radio Essex in reaction to the 1-1 score draw.
The U`s boss lamented Huddersfield`s "very good" result and insisted he would strengthen the squad during the close season for a renewed challenge next time around. The side closest to Colchester won by six clear goals to end the Essex side's small chance of play-off contention this term.
Boothroyd also said he thought "the league table never lies" as it looks like Southampton may even leapfrog United in the final standings, with two games reaming.
The former Watford boss however signalled out two players in particular for praise, the goal-getting Anthony Wordsworth and goalie Ben Williams, after Saturday`s display.
He said: "Woody [Wordsworth] would be an example of a real positive this season and there are many. He`s a young boy, he`s done very, very well - I think it`s his first full season. He`s had a few daft disciplinary issues but that`s all part of his growth and part of his getting better."
On Williams, who was not covered following an unsuccessful save for the away side`s equaliser, Boothroyd added: "We shouldn`t be in that position. You rely on your goalkeeper to make saves and you rely on him to keep the ball out of the net. He`s had a good season, Ben, and another one who is a real positive."
Both are stand-out contenders for the side`s Player of the Season award. ![]()
