Boothroyd`s Back! Ex-Boss Takes Platt Gamble

Aidy Boothroyd has taken what he considers is a calculated gamble in bringing Clive Platt from Colchester to Coventry, with goals on the agenda.

The former U`s boss hailed a player also openly admired by Norwich City`s Paul Lambert one of "the most underrated" footballing talents he has managed and his exit signals Boothroyd`s intent to continue playing target-man football, for which he was first famed at Watford.

Platt, now 32, signed for Colchester from MK Dons in 2007 but his fairly low 27-goal return from 134 games has not stopped Boothroyd from capturing his signature.

His sale will probably divide opinion as much as Platt`s own playing style, which was derided at times in a similar fashion to comments made about Aston Villa man, Emile Heskey.

Others, however, recognised his high work-rate and will accept he had a difficult task in replacing the once-prolific Chris Iwelumo, who went originally to Charlton but is now on Burnley`s books.

Platt, born in the Black County, sees several personal advantages to leaving United but it remains to be seen if he can cut the mustard to benefit a Championship-styled Coventry with eventual ambitions to play in the Premier League.

He leaves United for an undiscoled fee.

Shame as like Boothroyd I think he was very underrated and brought a lot to the team. We seem to be lacking a little up front now. Odejayi and Gillespie are both a little injury prone. Maybe Joel Thomas will get a decent chance to put a few appearances in?
