Proud Izzet Presides Over Armband
Colchester United`s new skipper is the long-serving midfielder Kem Izzet, whose promotion from vice roles in the past is a long-deserved honour and fittingly coincides with his testimonial season.
Izzet will celebrate ten years with the U`s in April and the 29-year-old has finally seen his distinguished service, since arriving as a youth player from Charlton, rewarded with a professional accolade.
The player recently told the BBC he is starting to ponder his next move some way down the line, saying former manager and now Coventry coach Aidy Boothroyd advised him to consider coaching.
Izzet has taken on the role from 24-year-old Magnus Okuonghae, who has openly now commented he found the duties difficult last term.
The U`s position as leader of men has become something of a taboo blessing during the past two seasons, following furor surrounding both Chris Coyne and Pat Baldwin, who both endured short stays in the position due to changes in management.
Ward`s selection of Izzet indicates he will be lynchpin this season and should prove a sound choice.
Boothroyd on Izzet, January 2010: "He's not a great goalscorer, you wouldn't say he's a big physical presence, he's not quick and you wouldn't say he's a particularly creative player. I`ve just killed Kemi!"
