One-time Dagenham defender and former Fulham trainee Magnus Okuonghae has admitted a debut season in League One as club skipper and rumored Premiership target took its toll.
The 24-year-old was neutered by John Still before completing his switch last summer and impressed sufficiently to win the captaincy from dropped defender, Pat Baldwin, and an attendant contract extension after reputedly impressing Premier League scouts in the first half of 2009/10.
This week, long-serving midfielder Kem Izzet officially took over from Okuonghae as Colchester`s new leader of men, meanwhile leaving the outgoing skipper time to reflect on his relinquishing of the role.
'It was an honour to be captain, but I do feel that at the end of the season it maybe didn`t help my performances - it became a little bit of a burden," he explained to the EADT.
Supporters may concur the imposing player was sometimes found out as the demanding fixture schedule and extra responsibilities told.
His replacement Izzet is seen widely as a fair and deserved selection as the next on-field chief.![]()
