Colchester United will face Premiership side Sunderland for the first time since 2006/7 after the recent League Cup second-round draw.
The end of the month brings what resembles an exciting but all the same tough prospect for the Essex side and evoke some memories of a brilliant day in their brilliant first Championship season and a very memorable fixture indeed.
The U`s triumphed at Layer Road unexpectedly and spectacularly in April 2007, becoming the first side to topple Roy Keane`s almost unassailable title challenge.
Noted for giant-killing heroics aplenty that season, the club were the first side tow win against the Black Cats in eighteen league games; the 3-1 win even put the visiting side`s promotion party on hold. That day, Wayne Brown, Jamie Cureton and Richard Garcia were all on the scoresheet.
Colchester`s convincing 3-0 win in the first round of the 20010/11 competition this week is what landed them with such an appealing tie.![]()
