Crisis of confidence

John Ward believes that Colchester are currently suffering from a 'crisis of confidence', not that he can understand why?

Colchester's recent poor form continued with another defeat, and an FA Cup exit, at the weekend but The U's manager is at a loss to understand this 'confidence crisis': 'I'm massively disappointed like everyone else at Colchester United. We haven't performed as well as we'd like to.

'I think there's a shortage of confidence around the team, which is surprising. But that happens sometimes to people and I'm working with people, not robots. You can't just switch them on and off and it's not unique to us.

'Swindon are in good form and they showed some of that but it was a chance to win the game, I felt, and we didn't step on to that and make that happen. We haven't worked their goalkeeper enough and we're disappointed with what we've done.'

Whatever has brought this about, perhaps a run of defeats (including one heavy one) has not helped, Ward knows Colchester need to shake out of this rut, and fast!

A reaction against Bury is what he wants to see: 'we missed a bit of an edge and we were waiting for something to happen instead of making it happen. That's what happens when your confidence dips a little bit but we're back here again next Saturday against Bury and we have to pick it up pretty quickly.'
