Wilnis excited by Colchester chance

Centre of Excellence coach Fabian Wilnis, as he told The Gazette, is 'very excited about the prospect of being at Colchester'.

The former Ipswich defender had been coaching in Holland before he was brought in to work alongside some familiar faces from Ipswich Tony Humes, Richard Hall, Sean Thacker and John McGreal: 'I'm very excited about the prospect of being at Colchester United.

'I had been working as an assistant manager for a Conference team over in Holland.

'But I was looking for a new coaching job over here and I'm really looking forward to it.

'There are a lot of familiar faces here from my Ipswich days.

'I know Tony Humes, Richard Hall, Sean Thacker and John McGreal from Portman Road and it's great to be reunited with them once again.'

The Dutchman is hoping that his experience of football at various levels in England, and in his native Holland, will help out the younger players that he is working with: 'I hope the experience I've had in the game will help me to do that and the more you play, the more you learn from people.

'I've played a lot of games in the Premier League and Championship in this country and I've also played in the premier division in Holland.'

The academy set-up is something that also impresses the 41-year-old with the desire for this to bare fruit one of the main factors for him joining The U's: 'the set-up at Colchester is really good and the chairman is putting a lot of money into the Academy here.

'A lot of clubs at the moment are only really putting money into their first team but the Academy is very important.'
