Expecting offers

Offers are expected to come in for Colchester players this month, although they will not be allowed to leave on the cheap.

That, as he told The Gazette, is the view of U's chairman Robbie Cowling: 'we expect there to be offers for players this month but if they don't meet our criteria, we will not sell them.

'We will listen but it does not mean we will accept.'

The worry is that some of these players, the likes of Magnus Okuonghae, John-Joe O'Toole, Ashley Vincent and Ben Williams, that could see the most interest in them are out of contract at the end of the season and as such could leave for nothing in the summer.

Cowling has said that he would sooner see this than be forced into parting with them on the cheap as retaining them until the summer, at least, could help a promotion push: 'if there is a player out of contract, we are unlikely to be able to afford to offer him the same amount as we did before.

'If the players who are out of contract at the end of the season leave for nothing, then so be it.

'We are six points off the play-offs and promotion is the silver bullet, with more money coming in from the solidarity payments from the Premier League.'

Keeping players, gaining promotion to the championship and then losing them on a free transfer would be more beneficial to The U's, although what will happen this month remains to be seen?
