Ward: It's a fantastic result

Colchester managed something that no other league one club had up to Tuesday night, they beat Charlton at The Valley.

John Ward felt that his U's side worked 'exceptionally hard' to come away with the points from a side that are so good: 'it's a fantastic result.

'This team haven't been beaten here and are champions-elect. I said that before the game. They've got some very good players.

'When you talk about playing a team unbeaten at home and with the quality of playing staff they have, you either have to be very lucky or work very hard. We worked exceptionally hard.'

Ward still had praise for Charlton but knows what his rival manager, Chris Powell, will be disappointed with but no one could criticise the opening goal from Anthony Wordsworth: 'I think Chris Powell (Charlton boss) will be disappointed with the result, but their performance was very good. What he will be disappointed with is the amount of shots on target despite the possession they had in our half. We both had three shots each on target.

'The first goal was a wonderful goal. Straight out the blue and even the most biased Charlton supporter has to recognise that was quality. The second one was a calamity for the goalkeeper.'
