Powell Tight-Lipped On Wordsworth

Rumours circulating yesterday that Charlton were lining up a £250,000 bid for U's midfielder Anthony Wordsworth have been dealt with by the Addicks' boss, Chris Powell, today.

Speaking to the local press, Powell kept his cards close to his chest when quizzed over the rumours.

'I know of Anthony Wordsworth and he's a talented player,' he stated. 'But we'll have to wait and see if anything happens with him in January or at the end of the season.

'He is a player who has been at Colchester for a while and is going to be out of contract in the summer, so maybe Colchester are trying to drum up some interest.

'They're in a difficult place and obviously want to freshen things up so will want to move players in and out.

'I've seen him before and he obviously scored a fantastic goal against us last year, but at this present moment he isn't a player I will be looking to move in immediately.'

Wordsworth is currently about to begin a two-game suspension this weekend having picked up his tenth yellow card of the season away at Doncaster last Saturday.

The cynics may suggest that when Powell says 'immediately', he may instead be waiting for these two games to pass.

With little talk of a new deal it appears inevitable that Wordsworth is set to move on before the start of the new season, but whether the club can cash in this month or would prefer to retain the stand-in skipper to stave off relegation remains to be seen.
