U's Slip Into Bottom Four

U's Slip Into Bottom Four

The U's sunk to a record-breaking ninth successive defeat this afternoon at the hands of fellow strugglers Scunthorpe United, dropping the U's into the bottom four.

With the game being billed as the biggest of the season so far, there was an air of optimism around the Weston Homes Community Stadium before play, with the U's taking the game to their visitors throughout most of the first half.

However, a wonder-strike from Jimmy Ryan just before the break saw the Iron take a one-goal advantage in with them, before former U's-loanee Karl Hawley doubled that advantaged moments after the interval.

Substitute Freddie Sears pulled one back for Joe Dunne's side with just over half an hour to go but, despite the U's pressing and probing, they couldn't find the all-important leveller.

It's the first time that the Iron have been out of the bottom four since late September, whilst the U's fall back into the relegation zone for the first time since Joe Dunne took over from John Ward.

Certainly, times are worrying for U's fans with their side continuing to lack enough of a goal threat whilst maintaining a leaky defence.

Strong reinforcements are surely needed during the rest of the January transfer window, with experience required to help the club steer clear of the mire that currently surrounds the on-pitch results.

Next up for the U's is a huge trip to bottom-side Hartlepool who continue to show signs of life, such as a one-all draw away at Shrewsbury this afternoon.
