Clinton Morrison Comes In For Praise
Clinton Morrison has come in for praise from both Joe Dunne and Jabo Ibehre following a lively role from the bench in Saturday's 2-0 win away at Stevenage.
It has undoubtedly been a challenging season for the experienced striker, who has failed to find the net more than just one dubious goal in the home draw with Sheffield United back in August.
Having started just eleven league games this season and instead finding himself on the bench more often than not, making fourteen substitute appearances, Clinton's time on the pitch has remained fleeting and frustration is to be expected.
However, the former Premier League hitman isn't letting it get to him off the field and he continues to be a massive influence in the dressing room according to his boss and strike partner.
'Clinton has been a key figure in our resurgence,' Dunne told BBC Essex after the win on Saturday. 'Ever since we beat Walsall he has been great in the changing room; he's great with the younger lads and he's been there and done it.'
It has been argued that Morrison has struggled to fit in with the team's set up this season, often appearing isolated as a lone forward and failing to fill the powerful target role that Jabo Ibehre has brought to the side.
The vacancy created by Kayode Odejayi's departure for Rotherham in the summer seemed to remain empty before the arrival of Ibehre, and his signing consigned Morrison to the bench; a frustrating time for a long-time pursuit of John Ward.
But Ibehre reiterates their manager's point about Morrison's influence in the dressing room, also explaining to BBC Essex that his enthusiasm persists.
'Clinton is a great guy and a great ambassador for the game,' revealed Ibehre. 'He lifts everyone's spirits in the dressing room with his chatter.
'He still has a great enthusiasm and hunger for the game, and it's great to be a part of it with him.'
Despite struggling for starts, Dunne continued to highlight the influence that the Republic of Ireland international has had on the U's recent good run of five wins in eight.
He finished: 'He's committed to helping the club move forward and is far from being a mercenary or anything like that; he's been instrumental for us moving forward.'
