Heath Departs The U's
U's central defender Matt Heath is to leave the club with the news that he isn't going to be offered an extension to his existing contract that expires this summer.
The 31-year-old centre half originally signed the for the U's on loan from Leeds United towards the end of the stay in the Championship, making five appearances for Geraint Williams' side before making the switch permanent.
In total, the defender has made 111 appearances in the U's blue and white and, just this week, picked up the Community Player of the Year award for his efforts around the local scene.
Unfortunately for Heath, he was only able to make six appearances this season and, speaking to the official website, he admitted that that gave him enough reason to prepare himself for a departure.
'Of course I'm disappointed,' he revealed. 'But it didn't come as a bolt out of the blue because I hadn't been playing.
'I've really enjoyed my time at the club, I've met some great people and would like to thank everyone.'
Heath also enjoyed loan spells with both Brighton and Southend during his time at the club.
News of the experienced defender's release is the first activity of the summer, and plenty more will be expected to follow in the coming weeks.
