U's Chairman Optimistic For New Season

U's Chairman Optimistic For New Season

Season ticket sales have been up for the U's this summer compared to previous years, and that is something that has particularly pleased chairman, Robbie Cowling.

Following a tough season on the pitch last year where the U's suffered eleven defeats in their twenty-three home games, the U's supports defiantly stuck behind their team and kept a feel-good feeling around the stands.

A challenging year has brought the fans together, and with two club legends at the helm in Joe Dunne and Mark Kinsella, many U's fans feel that the side is more relatable to them than it perhaps has been in recent years.

And the U's chairman agrees with this, telling the official website that a tough year on the pitch has reiterated the importance of the club to the fans.

'Last season's battle has some how galvanised everyone, and we've been very pleased with season ticket sales,' he reflected. 'Sometimes you need a battle for people to realise how much the club means to them.

'People are pleased that the club feels very much Colchester United with the management team and the young lads coming through, and fans will get behind that.

'As always, we're optimistic for the new season but I think we have quite a lot of reason for that.'

Craig Eastmond has proven to be the U's main summer signing to date with the Arsenal youngster penning a permanent two-year switch to the U's following a successful loan spell in Essex last season.

Eastmond arrived at the club with fellow Gunner Sanchez Watt, as well as Jabo Ibehre from MK Dons. Ibehre has gone on to sign permanently and then extend that deal for another two years in recent weeks, whilst Watt is to be released from his Arsenal contract at the end of this month.

Although Watt has yet to sign for anyone, assistant manager Mark Kinsella recently spoke of his desire to bring the pacey winger back to the U's and Mr Cowling confirmed that the club had spoken to Watt.

'Everyone saw what happened when Craig came to the club with Sanchez and Jabo, they were exceptional and did well,' he explained. 'We signed Craig and were talking to the others, we'd love to sign those two as well [Ibehre has since signed].

'They're good players and there will be a lot of competition, but those are the sort of signings we're looking to bring into the club.'

Fingers crossed for the return of Sanchez Watt in the coming weeks then, along with one or two others to boost the U's squad.
