U's To Bring In New Keeper

U's To Bring In New Keeper

Having signed an extended contract to remain with the U's for a while longer, U's goalkeeper Mark Cousins revealed that Joe Dunne would be bringing in another goalkeeper to bolster the competition in between the sticks.

It has been widely expected that Chelsea's Sam Walker would be returning for another loan deal at some point ahead of the new campaign beginning, with the likelihood being a season-long switch.

However, for the time being the Chelmsford-born Cousins remains the U's number one and he explained that he was determined to make the most of any opportunities to cement his place in the starting eleven.

The 26-year-old shot stopper has been with the U's senior squad for nine years as he enters his tenth season with the club, but he has always played understudy to a number of 'keepers ahead of him such as Aidan Davison, Dean Gerken and Ben Williams.

With Williams heading to Hibernian, John Ward made Cousins his number one this time last year and he began the season in fine form, putting in a number of man of the match performances before finding himself out of the side.

'It was a frustrating season for me, but I did play more than I have played since I've been with Colchester,' he admitted to the official website. 'So hopefully I can build on that next year.

'There will be another goalkeeper coming in and the gaffer has said that, but I'm used to having that competition as we've always had plenty of that over the years here.'

First John Sullivan arrived from Charlton for a month to take Cousins' place between the sticks, before the successful addition of Sam Walker to see the U's through until the end of the season.

There were many suggesting that Cousins would be likely to move on this summer but, following a lengthy period of thinking time, the local lad signed up to fight for his place in goal.

'These things take a while, but I'm pleased to get it sorted,' he stated. 'You can't jump at the first contract offered, you have to weigh up all the options. But Colchester is the best place for me to be.

'It's my tenth season now so I'm looking forward to it and, hopefully, we can do better than last season.'
