Andy Bond endured a frustrating campaign last season after the appointment of Joe Dunne, but having fought his way back into first team contention at the end of the season he is determined to continue where he left off.
A mainstay in the U's side under previous boss John Ward, the former Barrow midfielder was shipped out on loan to Crewe for a month where he began his footballing career.
However, a rejuvenated Bond returned to the Weston Homes Community Stadium and put in a string of impressive midfield performances as he showed glimpses of the form he brought with him when he first joined from Barrow.
And, after a disappointing season on the pitch for the team as a whole, he revealed that the side were keen to get off to a good start.
'We're not a team that should be down the bottom of the league and we don't want a repeat of last season, so we have to hit the ground running,' he admitted to the official website.
'It was a frustrating season for me but I came back in and enjoyed it. Anyone can beat anyone in our division and it depends on the sort of bond you have in the squad - we have a good one so I think we can do well next season.'
The 27-year-old Wiganer was speaking as the U's returned to pre-season training, with Joe Dunne bringing his players back earlier than most with the team linking up again in the middle of June.
Fixtures begin this afternoon as the development squad take on Hadleigh in the first of the pre-season fixtures.
