Joe Dunne has praised his side for being resilient in holding on to their one-goal advantage for all three points when they took on Port Vale at the Weston Homes last weekend.
The U's front four were particularly lively with quick play and clever movement proving too much to handle for the visiting defence and, although it took its time, the goal eventually came to secure a 1-0 win.
And the U's boss was full of praise for the front four of Sanchez Watt, Jabo Ibehre, Freddie Sears and Gavin Massey, with the latter grabbing the goal to get off the mark for the season.
'We started exceptionally well and the onus was on the front four to create,' he explained to BBC Essex post-match. 'We saw that in the opening half an hour - we could have scored more but I'm pleased with victory.
'Some of the football and the interchanging of the front four was great. It's some of the best movement I've seen within the club and it's exciting for the future, but we won't win every week so let's embrace it when we do.'
The goal didn't arrive until the seventy-fourth minute, just as U's fans would have started to wonder if the deserved breakthrough would ever turn up - or, indeed, if it could swing the other way.
However, Massey was on hand to steer the ball home after Jabo Ibehre's effort was diverted, and Dunne felt that the U's were always set for three points once the ball had crossed the line.
'We had to be patient and we have to keep believing,' he continued. 'You have to when you're creating chances, but Gavin was in the right place at the right time, and I felt we would win when we scored the goal.
'We were resilient after the goal and, on the balance of play, we deserved the win.'
The U's travel to Sheffield United this weekend in what is arguably the toughest of the U's opening league fixtures, and it will be interesting to see how the attacking intent is replicated at Bramall Lane.
