The Cardiff City left-back has impressed since moving on loan to Layer Road, which in that time he has made 12 Championship appearances for the U's.

Colchester manager Geraint Williams said:

'Chris Barker is contracted to Cardiff and they've got first dabs on him come January,'

'But we would like to throw our hat in the ring if he became available. Hopefully we can keep him happy until January and beyond because we would love Chris to stay here.'

Barker joined Cardiff for £600,000 in July 2002 and has made 164 league and cup appearances for the Bluebirds, Barker was loaned to Stoke in August, 2004.
