Leicester boss Rob Kelly laid the blame at the door of rookie referee Danny McDermid for his side's failure to leave Essex with all the points.
The rookie ref' had given Colchester a controversial penalty, which Chris Iwelumo slotted to earn Colchester a deserved 1-1 draw at Layer Road.
'They've had 11 straight wins here and I felt we deserved something, but everyone in the stadium knew something was coming and that decision has changed the game. It's his first game but it's our living.
'Football is supposed to be about players and supporters but that decision was a pivotal moment'
Colchester manager Williams was in agreement with his opposite number and felt the challenge was innocuous, although he felt his side was good value for a point after they fell one win short of equaling the club record for consecutive home victories in a season.
'I've watched it [the penalty incident] back with Rob and we both felt it was soft,' he said. 'I can understand Leicester being a little bit disappointed. But I'm not one to cry when decisions go against us.'
Colchester Captain Karl Duguid stood in disbelief as McDermid showed him a red card believing that he had already cautioned the Colchester Skipper, Duguid persuaded the referee to check with his fourth official and the punishment was just a yellow.
Williams refused to blame referee and said,
'We all make mistakes, but someone has to move up the ladder and he did his best,' he added.
'He thought he had already booked him but Karl asked him to check. There were seven bookings but I didn't see a tackle in the game. But I'm assessing my players and I'm sure someone will be assessing him.
'A point at home isn't exactly terrible, and now it's 34 points from 36 which isn't bad.
'I asked the players to be brave at half-time because we were playing too deep, and in the second half it worked. But credit to Leicester, they deserved a point.'
