Colchester without a win in 2007 took the lead at Portman Road, but were pegged back with a dubious penalty from Lee to even the scores before the break.
Legwinski scored from a corner to put the hosts in front early on in the second half, and Danny Haynes came off the bench to slot past Gerken.
Ipswich had a player sent off for clearing a goal bound effort with his hand, with Iwelumo converting the resulting spot kick, however this was too little too late.
Ipswich edged this encounter, however Colcheter were subject to some very bad decisions from very bad officials for the second time in 7 days, and with Alan Lee diving more than Duncan Googhew it was always going to be difficult to come back into the game.
