The Gaffer`s Frustrated!
Geraint Williams has voiced his frustrations after one full year in management during a BBC Sport report.
Following the transfer of Chris Iwelumo to Charlton Athletic, Williams tried to reassure disconsolate fans over the club`s imitate future.
'We can't suddenly go out and spend thousands on players and wages, that would be irresponsible,' said Geraint, who managed the U`s to a fantastic 10th placing at the first time of asking Colchester`s median Championship season.
We will look for some additions to the squad, but it's not just about money.'
He added: 'We were favourites to go down this time last year. Now people are saying we're an established Championship side and should be looking towards the Premier League.
'I prefer to think we're somewhere in between that and are looking to build.
I am talking to some players I would like to bring in and I'd like it done before we return for pre-season training.
'This time last year we couldn't do anything because we weren't sure whether Phil Parkinson would be manager or what was happening.
This time we have the space to build and we want things in place nice and early.'
Despite that, Williams admits that the lack of building work on the new stadium is not helping matters.
'It would be nice to drive prospective signings up the road and show them some steelwork and building underway. That hasn't happened,' he said.
'We can't expand here, we can get 6,000 fans in and that's it.
'We need to be able to develop - we also want our own training ground and the facilities which go with being a Championship club, but we work with what we've got.
'The players here were tremendous last season and we'll try to do the same next time round.'
