U's New Stadium: 'Worst` In Britain

Colchester MP Bob Russell, an avid fan of the Championship football team, has caused a storm this week by claiming that poor development of club`s new £14 million stadium will make it the county`s 'worst`.

In tonight`s Evening Gazette Russell will state: 'I don't mind being the bad guy that everyone shouts at over this.'.

Russell added: 'What is to be built is a stadium which will be worse than those to be found at many non-league clubs around the country, certainly not a stadium worthy of a Championship club.'

While the council is funding the project, the plans have been slammed for there delay and some have even accused the council of only taking an interest in the club in light of new national exposure in the Championship. After all, the club have been campaigning for a new ground for more than ten years.

'I have tried to be the football club's ambassador at national level, and I know full well what the stadium means to both the club and the town," Russell also sates today.

'But I feel Colchester United supporters deserve a better stadium. Frankly, they have been let down by both the club and Colchester Borough Council.'

Potential problems have been identified as a poor design, cramped seating and narrow turnstiles. As one fan said in response to the online article: "What`s the point of leaving Layer Road?"

I should hope he is not!! Well, I'm not sure. The issue seems to be that there will be no bar area for the fans e.t.c as well as all of the above...!
