Col U's Williams: More Signings?

Colchester United manager Geriant Williams has admitted in the wake of his side’s surprise draw with big-guns Sheffield United on Saturday that he is still looking to invest in more squad players before August 31st.

The first-game result was well earned, but saw the U’s last 90 minutes without the option to rest 41-year-old debutant, Teddy Sheringham. Forced to play the whole game despite completing minimal pre-season action, the forward will now miss tonight’s match against Shrewsbury in the League Cup.

In light of this, and due to injuries sustained by other forwards Jamie Guy and Kevin Lisbie, the manager admitted that he will strive to bring more personnel into his squad, in addition to those eight already added since May.

Williams confessed on BBC Radio Essex: “I had no attacking options and we’re a bit light in that department. I’m looking for a couple of additions to the squad; one striker and maybe one defender.”

That news is likely to excite fans, who had presumed that the club’s biggest summer spree in their history to have been over with the capture of Hungarian international centre-back Bela Balogh.
